Description

In 2018, Guatemalan-American Natalia Valle decided to take a weaving workshop hosted in Guatemala’s Lake Atitlán, specifically in the towns of San Juan and San Pedro. There, she learned traditional weaving techniques and patterns from local weavers, which deeply influenced her. Upon returning to L.A., she decided to translate what the women taught her on a backstrap loom onto canvas. "I consider my paintings to be like a love poem not only to the country of Guatemala but to the people who inhabit these beautiful towns and landscapes. There is so much to explore and see in Guatemalan textiles, and I think it’s one of the most dynamic and colorful ways to represent a diverse nation with people from different regions."
