"I recognize my work today as the capture of experience and awareness, which I release by generating a kind of mental map that explains the world to me as an impressive and imprecise space to document, from its anxieties, hopes, joys, magical thoughts, and rites. Having not studied arts, but rather politics, I assume that my technique is free and mixed, without the rigor of academia, using materials that have emerged randomly, and yet are recurring materials that come to me, and when they don't appear, I seek them out like a soul in search of a body to inhabit."

Description

In these two works by Guatemalan artist Gerardo Cordon, conspicuous references to Guatemalan textiles are integral to the composition. The textiles serve as a background in the untitled piece and as part of the man's attire in "La carrera de las animas" (45 x 45 cm, 2023). Cordon’s use of traditional fabrics highlights the rich cultural heritage of Guatemala, weaving elements of local identity into his contemporary art.
