"This piece is inspired by the traditional zigzag weaving technique of the Maya. The background features a zigzag pattern delineated in black and white. The symbolism of colors in Maya textiles is a subject of debate, but it is generally believed that white represents air, spirituality, and the intangible, while black symbolizes night, death, and recovery. The superimposed lines refer to the growth of maize, the staple product of Maya culture, which is mentioned in the Popol Vuh as the origin of humankind." Guatemalan artist Ricardo Garcia
