Description
Simon Vega, El Salvadorean artist: “Much of my work is related to ancestral Mesoamerican cultures, among which the Maya are one of the peoples I admire the most (both the ancestral and the current Maya and how they maintain their roots). Elements of these cultures remain in the mestizaje of present-day El Salvador.
‘Spirit that lives in me, stop fighting against your destiny’ (2023) is part of a new body of work I am exploring. These works question the Eurocentric concept of ‘primitivism’ and incorporate Mesoamerican as well as Afro-Caribbean elements (my father was Panamanian, and we lived there for 8 years). In these pieces, I seek to materialize elements of an incomplete, hybrid, and timeless spirituality that has not disappeared.
In these works, there is a relationship with Maya architectural sculpture and Maya textiles (...) The motif of concentric diamonds has a direct relationship with its use in Maya textiles and culture, symbolizing the four directions of the universe.”
